In light of statistics evidencing that the environmental and sustainability sector was the second least diverse out of 202 professions in the UK, IEMA wanted to look at the professional state of its members.
Shift was chosen to conduct this study with the aim of gaining a full understanding of career paths and salary options in the sector, as well as providing an evidence base around member perceptions of current IEMA strategies.
- To ensure the research was robust, Shift first conducted 10 cognitive interviews of 40 minutes each with IEMA members to test the survey and check interviewees’ understanding of the questions and responses.
- Interviews were conducted via MS Teams/Zoom by Shift interviewers. Interviewees were recruited using IEMA contacts.
- The cognitive interviews were followed by a member survey that received 1,190 usable responses. The survey was only sent to UK-based members.
We delivered a comprehensive report and presentation that looked at careers in the sustainability sector, salaries/rewards and career progression. The study also provided insights into the barriers that people face in the sector, to help IEMA build an understanding around further action that could be taken to encourage more diversity.
